Elklan was established in 1999 by two experienced speech and language therapists Liz Elks and Henrietta McLachlan in response to a demand for training to be delivered by speech and language therapists to education staff to enable them to be more effective in their support of children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
In 2016 Furzehill Childcare Centre Ltd signed up to the ELKLAN programme as part of their vision to improve the quality of support and learning we provide for all children to develop as confident communicators. Over 6 months 10 staff across all 5 settings undertook the level 3 Early Communication Qualification, since then 2 more managers have also accessed the training. The managing director having achieved the level 3 qualification then went on to gain the level 4 which enables her to carry out audits and deliver the Communication Counts course. All staff across the organisation attended 5 hours training at level 2.
During the training period all of our settings were audited and we are delighted that all five settings were awarded the Communication Friendly setting award.
"Elklan Communication Friendly Setting (CFSe) accreditation is awarded to Early Years settings that have trained and supported all their staff in communication and language development. They will also have shown evidence of embedding this knowledge in targeted interventions and through the implementation of a setting communication policy. Accreditation can be achieved in one year and is renewed after three years. It is the most cost effective strategy available for capacity building in communication within settings."
